History of the Victoria Beer

Victoria is a Vienna-type beer with 4° alcohol and is the oldest beer in the country with more than 150 years, being one of the most traditional beers produced by Grupo Modelo.

This brand of beer was born in 1865, when the Swiss Agustín Marendaz founded the "Toluca and Mexico Company" in the city of Toluca, Mexico with only 13 workers.

By 1875 the company was acquired by the German Santiago Graff, and by 1885 between three and five hectoliters of beer were being produced daily to meet the region's demand, thus becoming one of the most important companies nationwide at the end of the 19th century.

Later, in 1935, the company Toluca y México was acquired by Grupo Modelo, thus acquiring all the brands that were produced, including Victoria beer.

On the other hand, one of the distinctive features of Victoria beer is King Gambrinus, and the legend say that he is the inventor of the beer, who is bearded, with the crown of a duke or king, who holds a pitcher, glass or mug of beer and sometimes with a barrel of beer next to or very close to it.

Finally, Victoria has always reflected her belonging to Mexico, and this can be seen in some of the slogans they had, such as "Victoria, La Victoria de México" (Victoria, yhe victory of México), "Victoria, la Victoria es nuestra" (Victoria, the victory is ours), "La Victoria es tuya” (The victory is yours), “Ni clara ni oscura, mestiza" ("neither light nor dark, half-blood), and even in some advertisements such as Day of the Dead.

And as a curious fact, as part of an advertising campaign, Victoria beer was a sponsor of the mexican soccer team Deportivo Toluca F.C. in the summer of 1999. The shirts of this team had the beer logo on the front along with the phrase “La victoria es nuestra" (the victory is ours), and this season the team was the winner, which reaffirmed this phrase.
