History of Twinkies

The Twinkie is a cupcake with a creamy filling made from butter and are made of a spongy dough filled with cream inside (“Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling”). The brand was created by the Hostess brand, and is prepared by the Continental Baking Co., based in the city of Kansas City.

It was invented on April 6, 1930 by James Dewar, a baker who was trying to make a sweet cookie with strawberry sauce.

Twinkies originally contained only banana cream filling, but this was replaced by vanilla cream filling due to restrictions during World War II.


In 1971, his advertising icon, Twinkie the Kid made his debut, appearing in commercials, packaging and merchandise, except between 1988 and 1990.

Between 1997 and 2005, in Mexico, Wonder launched the "Tuinky" and 3 flavors were marketed in presentations of 3 cupcakes per package; strawberry, vanilla and chocolate.


In June 2007 the Hostess company announced that it was returning to the banana cream filling and In 2012, at the beginning of a bakers' strike, the Hostess company announced the closure of its company, giving the last delivery on December 11, 2012 In Chicago.

On March 18, 2013 Twinkies made its return to the US market and in Mexico Twinkies returned until 2015, but now under the Marinela brand, this after Wonder was bought by Grupo Bimbo in 2005.

Finally, in 2018 Twinkie and Funko released the Twinkie The Kid Funko Pop!
